How to turn your paint sprayer into a disinfectant sprayer to help fight the spread of COVID-19

With reports emerging that COVID-19 can live on certain surfaces for up to 72 hours, we can all agree that the regular application of cleaning and disinfectant products is the key to stopping the spread of infection. While traditional cleaning products and disinfectant wipes are great for use in homes and small businesses, they simply aren’t an efficient and economic option for larger facilities and commercial buildings. There has to be a better way, right?

For professional painters and finishers, the optimal solution was right under their noses the entire time: Airless sprayers! Whether you’re disinfecting a small café, a local post office, or an entire corporate headquarters, they are the perfect tool for the job. Read on to learn everything you need to know to turn your airless sprayer into a disinfectant lifesaver.

Why airless sprayers?

Airless sprayers provide high output rates in order to complete disinfectant jobs faster and with far better coverage. Their high efficiency design and advanced spray technology allow you to set a large fan pattern with a lower PSI setting and greater droplet size for more consistent blanketing. By spraying a mist, you properly wet surfaces without running any risk of over-saturation and damage.

Spray guns are easy to maneuver and perfect for those hard to reach areas. Their long, extendable hoses allow for greater versatility in even the largest of spaces. These relatively inexpensive machines are easy to use, easier to maintain, and perfect for anyone who wants to get the job done fast and get the job done right.

How does it work?

Getting your airless paint sprayer set up to use disinfectant couldn’t be more straightforward. Just follow these six simple steps:

  1. Firmly tighten the connections on the device and check the seal using water before adding any disinfectant.
  2. Remove the water, then place your disinfectant of choice (see below) into the hopper or insert the suction system directly into the disinfectant container.
  3. Set the pressure to around 1000-1500 PSI.
  4. Use a low-pressure spray tip, if available. When using other nozzles, the application speed will need to be adjusted accordingly.
  5. Apply the disinfectant quickly and keep the sprayer constantly moving to apply a full coating on surfaces without causing the disinfectant to run or pool.
  6. For exposure times, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the disinfectant you are using.

WARNING: Important safety information

  1. Read the owner’s manual and all safety instructions thoroughly before use. Legal, regulatory, and functional requirements must also be strictly observed.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s safety recommendations for wearing proper PPE, such as protective suits, gloves, goggles, and breathing protection.
  3. If spraying alcohol-based or flammable products, the spray device should always be located at least 15 feet outside of the hazard zone at all times.
  4. Ensure that there is sufficient natural or artificial ventilation in the spray zone.
  5. Check that there are no possible ignition sources in the area to be disinfected (lit cigarettes, sparks, hot surfaces, etc.).
  6. Remove or properly cover all electronic devices (computers, lights, appliances, etc.) before spraying.
  7. Flush the system thoroughly with water immediately after use or during any work interruptions. Many of these cleaning solutions are highly corrosive and should never be left in the pumps more than 15 minutes after use.
  8. Ensure that there is no remaining disinfectant liquid in the unit after use. Check the filters in the gun and sprayer daily and clean or replace as necessary.
