Tools that last and perform effectively are essential to completing consistently high-quality drywall work – and work of any kind, for that matter. Faulty or worn drywall tools can prevent you from completing jobs on time and can result in shoddy, hazardous work throughout and following the project.

The quality and reliability of your work are crucial components, and strengths your tools should possess, as well. Here are some signs that may indicate your tools are damaged and some tips on what to do if such an occasion arises.

Signs your tools are worn or damaged

In many cases, you’ll know without a doubt if a tool is worn or damaged, as a piece may break off or bend beyond passable use. In other cases, however, the less-than-ideal condition of a tool may not be as visibly clear. Your drywall tools may be worn or damaged if:

  • Jobs are taking longer than they should
  • You are frequently having to go back and fix mistakes
  • Tools are sticking or slipping while being used
  • End results don’t look the way you expected

Not only do these issues cost you time and money, but they also lead to dangerous working conditions. If a tool slips or produces poor work due to wear or damage, it can injure you and anybody on the jobsite both during the project and after it’s completed.

The bottom line is if you feel like you could be performing jobs to a higher degree, the condition of your tools is worth taking a look at.

What to do if you suspect your tools may be damaged

Of course, tools aren’t always to blame for ineffective work or unsavory results. The saying “it’s a poor craftsman who blames his tools” exists for a reason. However, if you feel you’re doing everything right and are still consistently having issues, you should take a closer look.

If you don’t feel comfortable assessing or fixing your own tools, you don’t have time, or you simply aren’t sure what’s wrong (or aren’t sure if anything is wrong in the first place), consult a drywall tool expert to be sure. They’ll be able to tell whether you should repair or replace a tool based on its current condition and its intended future uses.

Note: Don’t continue to perform work with tools you suspect may be damaged. This presents a safety issue to all involved. Instead take steps to complete a repair or replacement.

After repair or replacement

The feeling of working with newly repaired or replaced tools makes time on the jobsite far more enjoyable. They provide a new edge to help you complete jobs with increased efficiency and satisfaction. You’ll get the project right, everything will looks as it should, and you’ll fly through projects with newfound ease.
