Drywall Moisture Prevention

Aug 10, 2022

Mold spores need oxygen, water, and an organic food source to thrive. The organic material found in the paper facing the drywall panels (the gypsum core is non-organic and not subject to mold) provides a source for mold growth on drywall. There are a few ways to prevent mold from developing on drywall:

1. Remove the moisture source

The most effective way to prevent mold growth on drywall is to remove the moisture source. If there is a plumbing leak, repair it as soon as possible. If you live in an area with high humidity, use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air.

If you have flooding or other water damage, dry the wall as quickly as possible. Use fans and a wet/dry vacuum to remove as much water as possible. Then, open windows and doors to increase air circulation. If possible, prop up wet furniture on blocks to allow air to circulate underneath.

Once the wall is dry, you can prevent further mold growth by increasing air circulation. Use fans to circulate air in the room, and open windows and doors when weather permits. If you have a forced air heating and cooling system, make sure that the vents are not blocked and that the filter is clean.

2. Use a material other than paper for the outer layer on the drywall panels

This type of mold-resistant drywall is typically made with fiberglass mesh rather than paper for the facing and backing. Because fiberglass is a non-organic substance, mold has no food source to grow on it.

If you are worried about mold growth on your drywall, ask your local hardware store or home improvement center for mold-resistant drywall panels.

3. Use a paint with a mold-inhibiting additive

Paints with a mold-inhibiting additive can also help prevent mold growth on drywall. These additives release a gas that is toxic to mold spores, preventing them from growing.

If you live in an area with high humidity, or if you are concerned about mold growth, ask your local hardware store or home improvement center for a paint with a mold-inhibiting additive.

4. Clean and repair any cracks in the drywall

Cracks in drywall can provide a place for mold to grow. Inspect your drywall regularly for cracks, and repair any that you find.

Regular cleaning with a damp cloth can also help prevent mold growth on drywall, as it will remove any spores that might be present.

5. Use a dehumidifier

If you live in an area with high humidity, using a dehumidifier can help reduce the moisture in the air and prevent mold growth.
