Hanging drywall is a relatively straightforward process, even for an inexperienced do-it-yourselfer. Additionally, it's simply an interim step so, in the overall process, any mistakes can be covered up during the drywall finishing portion.

Drywall finish levels are defined as a guide for builders to follow when constructing homes. The different levels of drywall finish are achieved by using different techniques during construction and by applying different types of materials. There are six different types of finishes, each with their own purpose.

The first level –Float

How it works: A float finish is the roughest type of drywall finish; basically, it's lightly sanded with a belt sander and then primed. This method is okay for an unfinished basement or garage or if you are painting over the drywall. However, most homeowners prefer to level out the wall with a skim coat before applying the primer and paint.

The second level –Premixed joint compound

This type of finish works best for people who use drywall during construction projects; this product is meant for professionals only during in-between stages of their construction project. A premixed joint compound contains more than one ingredient (e.g. drywall joint compound, water, and other additives) which makes it easy to use.

The third level –Lightweight joint compound

This type of product is used for larger projects such as hanging wallpaper or mudding a large bathroom; it's perfect for filling holes in the wall and applying a skim coat over newly installed drywall.

The fourth level –All-purpose joint compound

This type of product can be used for any small or medium-sized project; it's perfect for touch-ups, mudding corners, and filling small holes in the drywall.

The fifth level –Tiling joint compound

As its name suggests, this type of product is meant for people who are installing tiles; it can also be used for mudding and finishing. So if you plan to install tiles over your drywall, level five is the right choice for you.

The sixth level –Finish coat joint compound

This type of product is meant for homeowners who want a smooth, professional finish; it can be used to mud, sand, and prime the walls before painting them.
